Personal Touch in Leadership

Managers are responsible for the productive use of the four “M”s of the organizational resources namely money, men, material and machines. The integration of these factors for the successful implementation of plans and programmes is also the sole responsibility of the managers. Human actions and activities directly influence the performance of any enterprise, so managers must rightfully develop and maintain their competence. Their objective is to mark out the right persons, help their development to meet new responsibilities and to maintain their interest, commitment and enthusiasm. Changes are inevitable. Mangers too must be ready to face the changes. They must change their style of working to keep in tune with the changes in people’s ideas, expectations and their environment. They can go about this by learning, recognizing and understanding the changes which are for improving the management techniques. There are basically two major elements in the current system of working relationship- the working and managing environment, which includes the structure of working organization, the web of working rules ,customs, the economic, social and political systems in the operating area, and the other are the people who are employed in the working organizations. Management essentially means managing people oriented activities. The basic ingredient for effective management is the power to lead and direct people. One whose occupation involves providing dynamic leadership in a working group is the manger. Hence the acid test and the crucial task of a manager is his ability to provide such leadership. The managerial job is to get the things done through people. An efficient manager, then, is one who leads, mobilizes and directs the energies and efforts of those under him with capability. Since management is a process of coordinating, reconciling, integrating the goals of individuals within the organization in a quest to maximize achievements of organization goals, managers must seek to convince each participant that the latter can maximize progress towards his own goal by maintaining or increasing his commitment or contribution to the organization. The role of the manager is to achieve work perfection and also to allow the participants promote and satisfy their desire of personal recognition. Managers no doubt have specific responsibilities, but they also have their personal goals. Since they are responsible for leadership and direction, the priorities they set for their own goals are of special importance. The major managerial responsibility is of achieving organizational goals and establishing hierarchy among these objectives. They must keep abreast with changes, external and internal, that take place and if necessary, and take appropriate steps to achieve the organizational goals and individual aspirations to commensurate with the changes. Leadership cannot be exercised in a vacuum. It is inextricably tied to the manager’s role of administration. Human resources need to be led but not driven. The manager holds major responsibility for task assignment and co-ordination. His aim should be to unite personal and organizational goals and to integrate personal efforts for total accomplishment of the mission. To see that action is taken at the correct time and place is a manager’s job. The quality of a leader depends on his capacity to lead and that of leadership is the ability to even get men to do what they do not want to do sometimes , and then to like it too. The success of a manager as a leader depends upon the creation of necessary change in others to achieve results and the evoked achievement is the result of effective leadership. The golden rules for effective managers are: 1. Determination for task completion and a strong drive for responsibility. 2. Intelligence. 3. Originality in solving problems and ability to undertake adventurous ventures. 4. Self confidence and sense of personal identity. 5. The readiness to accept consequences of action. 6. Endurance to tolerate frustration and delay. 7. Concern for the welfare of others. 8. Ability to influence the behaviour of others. 9. Understanding human aspirations and needs. 10. Absorptive, assimilative and accommodative power. The essentials for a manager are that the style of functioning should strictly be in line with the existing organizational set up and it should also be flexible when changes become desirable. Ultimately the task of the manager is to introduce the initiative, induce motivation and harmony in those working under him by creating a participative atmosphere and giving a high place to human dignity and togetherness to achieve organizational goals.
