The dictionary meaning of Prodigal Son is “a man or boy who has left his family in order to do something that the family disapprove of and has now returned home feeling sorry for what he has done”. A month ago Sachin Pilot, the exuberant and much adored young congress politician and the then Deputy Chief Minister and PCC President of Rajasthan Congress party, rebelled out of the Rajasthan government headed by Ashok Gehlot on the unacceptable principles of serving notice by the SOG and as per his own statements on other major issues, Pilot said, "It was about governance structures, delivery of promises, it was about collective and participative leadership in the state which we thought was not in line with what was expected of the Congress government,". Gehlot, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan never hesitated to show his animosity against Pilot even going to the extent of calling him “nikamma” and “nakara”.
If Sachin Pilot strongly felt that the principles, values, ethics and culture of the congress party of which he and his followers believe in firmly are being overlooked by the Rajasthan government and congress leadership in the state, and the Chief Minister publicly demonstrated his hostility toward him and the rebel MLAs and the central leadership also did not lend any semblance of support for him, it is mystery as to what made him to seek re-entry into the congress. Sachin Pilot further made a statement, “I have made no demands to the party brass. I will do whatever is asked of me. Gehlot is my elder and senior, but I have a right to point out what’s not right.” If it is so, why at all he rebelled and came out of the government losing his face value?
Sachin Pilot was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister and PCC President based on of his hard and sincere work and quality of leadership which he showed by leading by example which brought back congress to power. These positions were meant for him for which he never had to beg for it. Therefore, he never has to sacrifice his dignity for his destiny. The way he has come back to congress fold which seems unilaterally and arbitrarily, would make one think that he is a prodigal son of the congress who has accepted his mistakes and feeling sorry for what he had done. It gives the impression that he has compromised his principles and if so, compromising the principles that one believes in even for once, can be a grave and terrible mistake. If he is a person who believes in his principles steadfastly, then he would rather be alone with dignity than in a relationship that requires his sacrifice of his self-respect. I end this opinion of mine with a quote of Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, “"When it comes to human dignity, we cannot make compromises."
